The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have declared their first lists of contenders for the upcoming Himachal Pradesh assembly polls. While the BJP has announced a list of 62 contenders, the Congress high command has cleared party tickets for 46 seats.
Chief Minister Jairam Thakur will contest from the Seraj constituency, MLA Anil Sharma will contest from Mandi and Satpal Singh Satti will contest from Una.
The BJP high command has chosen eight candidates from the Scheduled Tribes category with only three seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribes category.
The party has given five tickets to women candidates. Around two-thirds of the recommended candidates are graduates and post-graduates. Also, sitting MLAs have been replaced.

CONGRESS FIELDS 19 SITTING MLAS
Among those Congress leaders who have been given tickets include 19 sitting party MLAs. The only sitting party MLA who has been denied a party ticket in the first list is Kinnaur MLA Jagat Singh Negi. The ticket allotment for Kinnaur’s only assembly constituency is on hold.

The ticket allotment has created resentment in many constituencies. Aditya Vikram Singh, who had contested the election from the Banjar assembly constituency in 2017, was denied a ticket. He has quit the party in protest against the denial of the ticket. This time, Khimi Ram was given a ticket from Banjar.
The ticket holders from Shimla’s seven assembly constituencies include the son of former chief minister Vikramaditya Singh and his loyalists.

Seven former cabinet ministers and three women have been given tickets.

According to party sources, tickets for the remaining 22 assembly constituencies will be announced soon.
